Richard F. Heydarian's "Sub-Saharan Africa" Statement About Mindanao, Can Be Refuted With RESEARCH

It's already bad enough that political expert Richard Heydarian. I'm amazed that Heydarian compared Mindanao's HDI development to Sub-Saharan Africa?! Finding it on my Facebook feeds just made me think if he truly bothered to do any research.

Source: Nestor Necesito

I would like to share data from Facebook Netizen, Nestor Necesito

Representing the west coast of Sub-Saharan Mindanao, I'm Nestor from Zamboanga City, Asia's Latin City and the Sardines Capital of the Philippines!

Based on the available data, here's a comparison of the Human Development Index (HDI) for regions in Luzon and Mindanao, along with averages for Southern Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Philippine Regions by HDI:

- Luzon:

  - Top Regions:

    1. National Capital Region (NCR):

       - 2024: 0.851 (Very High)

       - 2019: 0.859 (Very High)

    2. Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR):

       - 2024: 0.758 (High)

       - 2019: 0.743 (High)

    3. Ilocos Region (Region I):

       - 2024: 0.736 (High)

       - 2019: 0.712 (High)

    4. Central Luzon (Region III):

       - 2024: 0.734 (High)

       - 2019: 0.734 (High)

    5. CALABARZON (Region IV-A):

       - 2024: 0.726 (High)

       - 2019: 0.718 (High)

  - Bottom Regions:

    1. Bicol Region (Region V):

       - 2024: 0.687 (Medium)

       - 2019: 0.680 (Medium)

    2. MIMAROPA (Region IV-B):

       - 2024: 0.673 (Medium)

       - 2019: 0.694 (Medium)

- Mindanao:

  - Top Regions:

    1. Davao Region (Region XI):

       - 2024: 0.697 (Medium)

       - 2019: 0.708 (High)

    2. Caraga (Region XIII):

       - 2024: 0.698 (Medium)

       - 2019: 0.710 (High)

    3. Northern Mindanao (Region X):

       - 2024: 0.694 (Medium)

       - 2019: 0.712 (High)

  - Bottom Regions:

    1. Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM):

       - 2024: 0.646 (Medium)

       - 2019: 0.629 (Medium)

    2. Zamboanga Peninsula (Region IX):

       - 2024: 0.668 (Medium)

       - 2019: 0.672 (Medium)

Averages:

- Luzon Average HDI:

  - Calculated from the provided regional data:

    - (0.851 + 0.758 + 0.736 + 0.734 + 0.726 + 0.687 + 0.673) / 7 = 0.738

- Mindanao Average HDI:

  - Calculated from the provided regional data:

    - (0.697 + 0.698 + 0.694 + 0.646 + 0.668) / 5 = 0.681

Comparative Averages:

- Southern Europe Average HDI:

As of the 2022 data presented in the United Nations Development Programme's Human Development Report 2023/24, Southern European countries exhibit the following Human Development Index (HDI) scores: - Greece: 0.887, Italy: 0.895, Portugal: 0.866, Spain: 0.905.

  - 2022: 0.888

These figures indicate that Southern Europe maintains a high level of human development, with HDI scores ranging from 0.866 to 0.905. It's important to note that these values are based on data up to 2022, as reported in 2024. More recent data for 2024 are not yet available.

- Sub-Saharan Africa Average HDI:

  - 2022: 0.549

Southern Europe has a much higher HDI (0.888) compared to Luzon (0.738) and Mindanao (0.681), meaning it ranks significantly better in human development indicators such as life expectancy, education and income.

Luzon’s HDI is closer to the high category but still lag behind Southern Europe.

Mindanao lags behind Luzon and Southern Europe, remaining in the medium HDI category, highlighting disparities within the Philippines.

Sub-Saharan Africa has the lowest HDI (0.549), making Mindanao and Luzon relatively more developed but still far from European standards.

You're welcome in advance. Wakanda forever!

Heydarian is born in Baguio City and graduated from the University of the Philippines-Diliman. Is it me or do people who graduate from Manila's most difficult to enter schools, become arrogant as a result. It may be an ignorant statement born out of arrogance.

I took a photo of Necesito's profile (since he chose to leave it open). Some information here reveals that he shares a school with Heydarian. Necesito gave some empirical data. Of course, I wouldn't upload photos of Necesito's family photos, out of respect for his privacy.

In my case, I've been to Surigao City and Butuan City, a couple of times. I'm offended by what Heydarian said since my paternal grandparents (both deceased) came from Butuan. My paternal grandmother was born in Surigao City. I have friends who come from Mindanao. They can testify that Mindanao isn't Sub-Saharan Levels.

This may be a problem of being too educated, but having never learned real life skills. That's why I was told to move on from my poor high school academic record. This may also stem from an education system that cares more about grades than learning (read here).

Piracy is Almost Impossible to Defeat Thanks to the Filipino First Policy

Disney Let's face it piracy is hard to combat, right? For Filipinos, it's time to be honest that people have been engaged in piracy in some form. It may be pirated video games, CDs, VCDs, DVDs, etc. There are laws passed against piracy. However, one must ask why piracy is so hard to combat. Piracy bypasses through legalities. It's a common practice to have a pirated version of this and that application, because of the price . Installing MS Office and Windows 11 can be costly. It can cost PHP 7,000.00 for Windows 11 Home and PHP 5,400.00 for MS Office. Back in college, people would do anything to get the MS Office and Windows 11 because they needed it for their projects . It doesn't help that some well-to-do boomer are stingy instead of thrifty. It doesn't help either that some people just can't afford to buy the original software--given their income bracket .  It's easy to raise the Filipino First Policy by saying, "Tangkilikin ang sariling atin!" ...

When the Education Cares TOO MUCH About Grades, Schools Produce Idiots Instead of Intellectuals

During the pandemic, I was left in limbo thinking about my poor performance under K+10. It was something to think about that a classmate of mine who was both a summa cum laude and an honor student, ended up posting on his wall, "Students cheat because the education system cares more about grades instead of learning." The class salutatorian of our batch even commented about the good old days. I always had that feeling of insecurity and envy towards people better than me. But as Warren Edward Buffet would say, "Don't hate successful people. Learn from them instead." One of them is currently a teacher and the other is in Canada. I thought about my insecurities especially when I used to believe I was descended from a fine scholar and my family was a family of scholars.  I remembered the time I was taking MBA and got conned. I was asked, "Is that what MBA taught you?" I got touchy and ended up admitting, eventually, that I was only taking MBA for the presti...

My Thoughts on the NOT So Surprising Downfall of "Axie Infinity"

llustration: Daniel Guerrero Fernandez for Bloomberg Businessweek I remembered some time ago when I wrote about Axie Infinity . One article I wrote about why I never bothered to enter the Axie Infinity arena was the poor security . I compared it to a cockfighting game--a game where so few win and so many lose. A previous article I wrote was all about why play-to-earn games are too good to be true . What's not too surprising is the collapse of Axie Infinity . It's pretty much too good to be true. A casual gamer can testify that they buy online passes not to earn but to play . It's like buying a Playstation Plus card to play online for an entire year. You buy games out of the money you earn. You don't earn money out of gaming.  What truly never surprised me was how Axie Infinity crashed. It promised riches but onoy resulted to disaster. I even wrote that there could be an ironic moment somebody says that AXA is a scam while playing Axie Infinity thinking that it's an...

Bo's Coffee Club Proves Filipino Businesses That Innovate Can and Will Survive Against Foreign Competition

All the cries that foreign investors will automatically crush the local industry are just false. The first proof is how Jollibee managed to prove itself against McDonald's first in the Philippines and now in the world. Now, it's time to feature Bo's Coffee Club. Although I'm not such a big fan of coffee clubs myself (since I prefer tea)--I think it would be time to talk about another creative entrepreneur known as Steve Benitez. Steve is the founder of Bo's Coffee Club way back in 1996 and it's still going strong today even when there are other alternatives such as the tea shops which are popping up left and right. Endeavor Philippines said this very positive thing about Steve himself as the founder of the famous local coffee shop: Fast forward to 2015, Bo’s Coffee sets itself apart by serving customers with authentic and unparalleled Filipino hospitality and is vying with international chains, such as Starbucks, and even some local copycats. Bo’s Coffee is in f...

Helping Others is Good But Not to One's Own Expense

I advocate for helping others. I believe in helping others but there were times I overdid it. One time, I gave up so much that I had to be stopped. I was told, "If you gave everything now, how can you help others later?" I would donate some sums here and there, without thinking much. I'm not going to write them all. Some of them left me good while others left a bad taste (and a bad record) for me to endure. Sure, I want to help people but I tend to overlook the consequences. Some of the bad habits I had in the name of helping others are like: Being too generous with buying with credit. Eventually, I lost a lot of money which was never recovered . Some seasoned entrepreneurs may admit their own falls including the credit trap pitfall. Being too willing to give a discount without thinking about how it'd affect profits. Sure, a cheap price can draw people near. However, there are times when the prices of goods and services need to be raised to keep a business running. I ...

Why I Believe 100% Shares Ownership of Public Utilities Will Help Benefit Filipino Businessmen

Accru Melbourne Typhoon Odette certainly blew another serious blow in the Philippines, didn't it? I could remember the Typhoon Ruping when I was only in Kinder 2. Memories in kindergarten may fade over time but a few don't--such as how some people may mention that they failed kinder for sleeping in classes. The passage of the bill that allows 100% ownership of shares in public utilities has been condemned by certain Filipino organizations such as the League of Filipino Students, Kabataan Partylist, and Bayan Muna. The same old cry of "imperialism" is funny since these groups are using American made social media (such as Facebook and Twitter), they may be ordering meals from Grab which is from Singapore , they are using gadgets made from other countries (such as iPhones which were most likely assembled in China), and other stuff which were obviously not Filipino in origin. A heavy lesson from Odette and other previous disasters The reason why Odette restoration couldn...

How I Believe the Public Service Act of 2022 Will Benefit the Philippine Business and Economic Environment

One of the greatest news for the Philippines is the Public Service Act of 2022. The following can be read from the Philippine News Agency regarding President Rodrigo R. Duterte's signing of the new law into action: President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on Monday signed into law a measure amending the Public Service Act (PSA), allowing up to 100 percent foreign ownership of public services in the country. Republic Act (RA) No. 11659 or "An Act Amending Commonwealth Act No. 146 otherwise known as the Public Service Act” as amended was signed by Duterte in a ceremony at the Rizal Hall, Malacañan Palace in the presence of lawmakers and other officials. Under the amended PSA, the telecommunications, railways, expressways, airports, and shipping industries will be considered public services, allowing up to 100 percent foreign ownership in these sectors. Duterte also led the ceremonial presentation of newly enacted laws namely RA 11647 which amends the Foreign Investments Act; RA 11650, whic...

Why I Want to Avoid Day-to-Day Stock Trading in Favor of Long-Term Stock Investments

It's the bear market which is where financial experts like Warren Edward Buffett would recommend buying undervalued stocks from good companies (read here ). Recently, I decided to invest in the Philippine Equity Smart Index Fund (read here ). It's pretty much the recommendation of Buffett for most investors who don't have the time or energy to do so. Buying the Philippine Equity Smart Index Fund from ATRAM would give bits and pieces of the Top 30 companies that comprise the Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi). I also felt it would be time to discuss daily stock trading. I heard of people who trade stocks daily. However, hearing Buffett's advice to buy and hold for the long term with this quote: If you aren't willing to own a stock for ten years , don't even think about owning it for ten minutes .  Such a principle is all about long-term investing. I decided to go through Motley Fool and found on why day trading differs from investing:  Day trading vs. inves...

Like Taiwan, the Philippines Can Beat China Economically But It Must Swallow "Filipino First", First!

Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office in the Philippines It's Chinese New Year's Eve tomorrow and this is an essay I felt like writing before the festivities begin. I did write about how Taiwan bested China back then during the time of Mao Zedong . Mao was running his planned utopia via protectionism and it failed miserably . The Great Leap Forward was nothing more than a spectacular failure. Deng Xiaoping had to learn from Singapore in order to bring China forward. I'm afraid that China is going backward at the cost of the Chinese citizens. I don't blame all the Chinese citizens but their government for any tensions. Meanwhile, Taiwan, according to The Heritage Foundation has a score of 80.1% in terms of economic freedom . It's noted as follows: Taiwan’s economic freedom score is 80.1, making its economy the 6th freest in the 2022 Index. Taiwan is ranked 3rd among 39 countries in the Asia–Pacific region, and its overall score is above the regional and world averages...

No Amount of INSULTS Would Repeal the Laws of Business and Economics

It's October 2024 and I had no topic to write about a few days ago. Today, I decided to write about how using personal attacks is a common tactic . The use of Ad Hominems or personal attacks is attacking the person instead of the argument. Such people don't care if they contradict themselves--as long as they can insult because they're losers . One of the things I noticed is how I discuss the laws of economics. However, I can get an answer like, "Muh supply and demand! Da conspiracy of supply and demand!" I purposely misspelled the words to show how the person's lack of knowledge and use of mockery. Such persons can repeatedly hurl insults like saying I'm stupid, room temperature IQ, fake IQ, traitor to my fellow Filipino, etc. The list can go on and it's both amusing and irritating to recall every bit of insult I've had. But as advised, I'm told to learn to ignore insults  or laugh at them. An anonymous quote, probably said by Socrates was, ...
