Don't Get NCOVed on Valentine's Day by a Materialistic Girlfriend

Tomorrow is Valentine's Day and it's not always as romantic and magical as you think it is. Just think that Odette hit during the Christmas season canceling the celebration for those hit by it. If there are Christmas Day disasters--there are also Valentine's Day disasters. You can Google them and you may find that there are some disasters that happened on Valentine's Day. Though, what's more often overlooked is the materialism not only associated with Christmas but also on Valentine's Day. Yes, it's easier to expect a bank robbery, a massacre, a typhoon, etc. to hit on Valentine's Day over one thing--to catch NCOV on Valentine's Day from a materialistic girlfriend. NCOV here stands for No Cash On Valentine's instead of Novel Coronavirus.

The materialistic girlfriend disaster

A materialistic girlfriend will do more harm than good regardless of how she looks. She can very pretty or very ugly. Both an ugly material girl and a pretty material girl will run one's budget dry nonetheless. It's because a material girl doesn't have a practical mindset. To be materialistic is to be too concerned with money matters. A materialistic girlfriend would be one who's very difficult to please for the following reasons:
  1. She's too brand conscious. Her perception is that she must wear the most expensive brands instead of the best brands. Her perception of quality is based on branded goods rather than based on quality goods.
  2. For her, the more expensive the stuff, therefore it must be better. It's a very common mistake people make when they buy what's expensive. Sure, if something is too cheap then it must be too good to be true. If something is too expensive then it must be more on a brand name than quality. So, good luck with the money when prices skyrocket.
  3. She might insist on a rather ridiculously expensive date. Think about a romantic dinner? It must always be a Five-Star Restaurant when there are other affordable places that serve better food. She might even insist in getting a brand new Mercedes, BMW, or even a Limousine on the date which from what I heard, aren't fuel-efficient, so good luck if you run out of gas! For instance, did you know that Mercedes is really one of the worst offenders in wasting fuel? That's why I don't have any plans to get one even if people will laugh at me for driving a Toyota.
The problem with the materialistic girlfriend can be that she doesn't even know how to budget. Maybe, she comes from a lower-income family where money is treated poorly. Maybe, she comes from a rich family and her parents spoil her. Regardless, they are to be avoided at all costs. It's because one probably lives on loans and the other on a hand-to-mouth existence. Just thinking about buying all the expensive stuff makes me think why in the world did I use to have a materialistic mindset?

Materialistic women are prone to cheating--though not all. It's one thing to hear of wives having affairs because they want more money. A materialistic woman is prone to sacrificing her values for money. Let's think about the boyfriend who buys her the best presents so it isn't enough. Fed up, she decides to go after a high class guy who will buy her all the nice stuff she wants--Louie Vitton, Prada, Chanel. The high class guy may also drive her around in a BMW while they go to fancy restaurant. The best thing to do with that woman is to leave. Marriage with such a woman will just cause headaches. It would be better to break up, let her have her materialistic third-party because she's no good. In short, she cares more about money over morality. Money without morality is just plain meaningless!

Going for that money-wise, investment-savvy woman

I was thinking about how the budget-minded, investment savvy woman would be a good one. Here's what might be some things to look out for:

  1. She's not brand conscious. For her, the quality matters more than the brand. She may thank her ma got her a POCO M4 Pro phone or a good Samsung phone over an iPhone. She might be thinking long-term such as resell value or repair expenses if ever she needs to get it fixed. She may even be thinking about that if she breaks it--she doesn't need to beg to her boyfriend for one.
  2. She keeps in mind that it's all about the quality of the stuff. A stingy person is to be avoided though. She may be thinking about paying more for quality while trying to avoid spending more than usual. She might be thinking about it that she would want the stuff that does the best for less--not buy a brand that probably performs worse. It made me htink of how the iPhone X allegedly had problems during its new release.
  3. She would also think that the best dates are all about quality. She wouldn't want expensive roses and may settle for the ones from a flower shop. She may suggest a place that's affordable and serves really good food. She wouldn't mind riding a non-luxury car as long as it's not in a broken condition. Some of the best cars don't even cause much either. Think about how a Mercedes tends to lose so much fuel faster than a non-luxury car. It would be better to get your date ruined by a flat tire than to run out of fuel in the middle of the road.
A woman who understands the value of money may have lesser chances of cheating. It's because if she knows how to make her own money--she wouldn't need to keep milking out a man. It would be something that the only time she may leave a guy is if he's too materialistic or too stingy--both extremes with money. For her, she's the one who might help her man learn to budget the money. Such a woman learns to value what's better and not what's expensive. In turn, she as a wife would make a better Return On Investment (ROI) than investing to gain a materialistic woman. it's because she also has a long-term financial plan that's sensible instead of extravagant or stingy.

The Idiocy of Typing Anti-FDI Rants Using IMPORTED Devices, IMPORTED Platforms, and IMPORTED Social Media

Bulatlat It's very easy to open Facebook (or any related platform) and find lots of stupidity , right? There have been idiotic comments I find on Facebook such as FDI is this and that. We can find "thought leader groups" such as Alliance of Concerned Teachers, Anakpawis, Anakbayan, Bayan Muna, IBON Foundation, Kabataan Partylist, League of Filipino Students, and Philippine Anti-Fascist League (PH Antifa) who keep ranting about FDI as this and that. I even remember somebody dared to say that FDI caused Egypt to dry up. Ironically, North Korea and Venezuela, two protectionist countries, have very bad pollution problems. I'd blame it that they don't have the money to do a clean-up drive. How can you clean up a polluted river without the right equipment? How can you expect better power efficiency with outdated equipment that keep coughing up, cough, cough, lots of black smoke?  All the talks on social media can be very funny. The big irony is that all calls for "...

Get Stuck with EDSA, End Up Like Nokia

Yes, we should never forget what history teaches us. A classmate of mine, back in high school, wrote a simple and blunt essay called "History: A Teacher". I doubt he still has a soft copy, given it was already more than 20 years ago. I'd like to quote Duterte critic Andrew James Masigan wrote this in  Philippine Star --something that should remain relevant: I would never undervalue the 1987 Constitution. It dismantled the legal framework of a repressive regime and established the democratic institutions we enjoy today. For this, I am grateful. The 1987 Constitution was crafted with the best of intentions. It sought to put the Filipino first in all aspects of governance and to level the playing field amongst sectors and peoples.  But it is far from perfect. It failed to consider the importance of foreign capital and technologies and the stiff competition we would have to face to obtain them. In short, its economic provisions were short-sighted . So despite the Constitut...

It's Incredibly Frustrating to Discuss Economics with an Overspender

Overspending is just bad economics, isn't it? Economics is defined as the following for the sake of a review of high school basics: Economics is a social science concerned with the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. It studies how individuals, businesses, governments, and nations make choices about how to allocate resources. Economics focuses on the actions of human beings, based on assumptions that humans act with rational behavior, seeking the most optimal level of benefit or utility. The building blocks of economics are the studies of labor and trade. Since there are many possible applications of human labor and many different ways to acquire resources, it is the task of economics to determine which methods yield the best results. Economics can generally be broken down into macroeconomics, which concentrates on the behavior of the economy as a whole, and microeconomics, which focuses on individual people and businesses. It had me thinking of 2016 wh...

[UNPOPULAR OPINION] Why People Power Anniversary Should Be a Special Working Day Instead

As a blogger, I shouldn't turn on the PC in hopes of becoming popular . It should be to turn on the PC and blog to make a difference . Right now, I think about the controversy when President Ferdinand "Bongbong" R. Marcos Jr. declared the 1986 EDSA Revolution's anniversary as a working holiday . The call for some of the "minority lawmakers" is that they want to return the People Power Anniversary to a regular holiday once more. There are times I feel like, "Should we let it be a regular holiday again, so as not to repeat the Marcos dictatorship?" Sadly, the real answer is that the Philippines has been relying too much on EDSA , so it's practically ending up like Nokia . I was thinking about the reality of February being the most hectic month. February only has 28 days (and February 25 is near the month's end ). I thought that the Philippines also has too many national holidays more often than not. In fact, the Inquirer article written by...

Talking Economics with an Overeating Glutton

Two years ago, I wrote an entry about why discussing economics with an overspender is frustrating . Now, I was looking at certain fat people who say really dumb things about economics. Just recently, I was looking at a certain fat idiot (fortunately, he only has 1K+ followers) who posted on Facebook that not only will the parliamentary system cause the Philippines to become a dictatorship, but he also says that changing economic provisions will cause the Philippines to collapse and the country to fall into the hands of foreigners. I won't name the person out to avoid getting personal. However, the person is apparently very fat and he blames capitalism day in and day out. The person even says that businessmen do nothing and it's the employers that do everything. Has that fat slob ever heard that businesses are run by bosses and that if the bosses do screw up, they're the ones who are the most answerable? The employees are the cogs and the boss runs the cogs. I was looking at...
